What Is The Purpose Of A Floor Drain?
The purpose of a floor drain is to collect water from a floor surface and direct it into the building’s wastewater system. In a bathroom, it removes shower water, cleaning water, splashes, and accidental overflow before that moisture can spread into adjacent spaces.
That simple definition only describes the beginning of its job. A properly selected and installed bathroom floor drain also supports slip prevention, hygiene, waterproofing, odor control, and easier maintenance.
A Floor Drain Is the Lowest Controlled Exit Point
Water naturally travels toward the lowest point of a sloped surface. The floor drain provides a controlled opening at that point, allowing the bathroom floor to function as part of the drainage system.
Without adequate slope, water may remain in low spots even when the drain itself has excellent flow capacity. Without adequate drain capacity, water may accumulate despite a correctly graded floor. What a Floor Drain Does Not Do
A floor drain does not correct an incorrectly sloped floor. It cannot compensate for an undersized waste pipe, and a decorative anti-odor insert cannot replace a code-compliant trap where one is required.
It also does not remain maintenance-free. Hair and soap can block the strainer, while sediment may collect in the channel. Covers and internal components need to remain removable after the floor has been tiled.
Purpose Varies by Bathroom Type
