How To Install A Showerline Linear Shower Drain System?

A ShowerLine linear Shower Drain system should be installed as a coordinated assembly that includes the drain channel, outlet, waterproofing connection, floor slope, finished tile, grate, and maintenance access. The installation begins before the shower floor is tiled and should be planned jointly by the plumber, waterproofer, tile installer, and project contractor.

In this article, “ShowerLine” refers to a complete linear shower drainage arrangement rather than one universal drain construction. The actual supplied installation drawing must always be followed.

Begin With the Complete System Drawing

Do not begin by setting the stainless steel channel into an unfinished floor without confirming the surrounding layers.

The drawing should show:

  • Drain location

  • Finished drain length

  • Channel width and depth

  • Outlet center

  • Pipe diameter

  • Trap position

  • Waterproofing connection

  • Mortar-bed thickness

  • Finished tile height

  • Wall-board thickness

  • Glass-screen position

Confirm whether the drain will sit flush against the wall or leave a tiled strip behind it. A small change in wall build-up can alter the final grate position.

The installer should also verify that the grate can be lifted after the wall and floor finishes are complete.

Coordinate the Work Between Trades

Linear Drain problems often arise when each trade works from a different reference height.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Confirm the structural opening and drain position.

  2. Install or prepare the waste pipe.

  3. Dry-fit the channel and outlet.

  4. Establish the final floor and tile levels.

  5. Support and connect the drain body.

  6. Complete the waterproofing connection.

  7. Perform the required water test.

  8. Form the final sloped mortar bed.

  9. Install the tile.

  10. Fit and adjust the grate.

  11. Test the completed drainage system.

The waterproofer must know how the membrane connects to the drain flange. The tile installer must know the correct finished height. The plumber must leave the outlet in the approved position.

Changing the outlet after waterproofing may damage the complete shower system.

Support and Level the Channel

The drain channel must remain stable under foot traffic.

Use the supplied feet, brackets, mortar support, or installation frame according to the product specification. Fill beneath the channel where required so there are no unsupported areas.

Confirm:

  • Channel alignment with the wall

  • Level across the length

  • Outlet connection depth

  • Clearance around the trap

  • Grate height adjustment

  • Tile-edge relationship

Do not use the waste pipe as the only support. Movement at the outlet can damage the joint or create a low area around the drain.

Protect the channel during construction so mortar, grout, screws, and tile fragments do not enter it.

Connect the Waterproofing Continuously

The waterproofing layer must direct water into the drainage system rather than beneath or around it.

Depending on the drain, the connection may use:

  • A bonding flange

  • A clamp-down structure

  • A factory-applied membrane

  • A compatible adapter

  • A sealed stainless steel flange

The membrane should remain continuous at corners and wall junctions.

Do not puncture a completed waterproofing layer to adjust the drain without an approved repair method. A shower can appear dry at the surface while water is entering the structure below the tile.

Complete the required flood or water test before covering the system.

Form the Final Floor and Install Tile

Create the final mortar bed with a consistent fall toward the linear channel.

Where the drain is positioned against one wall, the shower may use a single-plane fall. This can support larger rectangular tiles and simpler grout alignment.

Allow enough height for tile adhesive and the finished tile. The tile edge should not prevent water from entering the drain.

Keep the drainage gap consistent along the complete length.

For a tile-in tray:

  • Use a tile thickness compatible with the tray depth.

  • Keep the tray light enough to remove.

  • Maintain an open drainage gap.

  • Do not grout the removable tray permanently into place.

After curing, remove all construction residue before fitting the strainer and grate.

Inspect the Completed ShowerLine System

Pour water across the corners, entrance, and areas farthest from the drain.

Check that:

  • Water reaches the channel

  • No low spots retain water

  • The channel does not move

  • The outlet connection remains dry

  • The grate sits securely

  • The strainer can be removed

  • The lifting hook can access the grate

  • The drain handles the shower flow

Run every installed shower outlet during the final test. A system that works with one hand shower may not provide enough capacity when a rain head and body sprays operate together.
