How To Install A Linear Shower Drain?
A linear Shower Drain is installed by coordinating the outlet position, drain height, waterproofing system, floor slope, tile thickness, and removable grate before the shower floor is finished. The drain body must be firmly supported, connected to the waste pipe without stress, and integrated continuously with the approved waterproofing layer.
Because drain structures and local plumbing requirements vary, the supplied technical drawing should take priority over a general installation guide.
Confirm the Drain Location Before Construction
A Linear Drain may be installed:
Against the shower wall
Near the shower entrance
Between the wet and dry zones
Across the full shower width
At one side of a walk-in shower
Wall-side installation often allows the shower floor to slope in one direction. A drain positioned away from the wall may require different tile planning and waterproofing details.
Before ordering the drain, confirm:
Finished shower width
Drain length and external width
Outlet diameter and location
Available floor depth
Waste-pipe direction
Tile thickness
Waterproofing method
Required drainage capacity
The drain should not be selected only according to the visible grate length. Its channel, outlet, trap, adjustment feet, flange, and surrounding construction must also fit the available space.
Dry-Fit the Drain and Waste Connection
Place the drain body in the planned position before applying mortar or waterproofing.
Check that the outlet aligns naturally with the waste pipe. Avoid pulling the pipe sideways to reach an incorrectly positioned outlet, as this can place stress on the joint.
Depending on the product, the outlet may be:
Central
Offset
Side-facing
Vertically connected
Horizontally connected
Confirm that the trap remains accessible according to local requirements and that the pipe has the necessary fall toward the building drainage system.
Dry-fitting also allows the installer to check whether the grate can still be removed after wall tiles, glass panels, and surrounding finishes are installed.
Set the Correct Drain Height
The top of the channel must coordinate with the finished tile surface.
Allow for:
Structural floor
Mortar bed
Waterproofing membrane
Tile adhesive
Finished tile
Grout joint
Drain frame or trim
The finished tile should direct water into the channel without creating a raised metal edge that traps water. The exact relationship between the tile and channel depends on the drain design.
Support the complete underside of the drain with the specified mortar or installation system. An unsupported channel can flex when stepped on, causing grout cracks, seal failure, or movement around the outlet.
Check the drain in both directions with a level. Unless the product drawing specifies an internal fall, do not tilt the channel unnecessarily.
Integrate the Waterproofing System
Waterproofing is the most important part of the installation.
The membrane must connect to the drain using the flange, bonding surface, clamping structure, or adapter intended for that system. A bead of sealant placed around an unrelated drain edge is not a substitute for a complete waterproofing connection.
Common systems include:
Sheet membranes
Liquid-applied membranes
Traditional shower-pan liners
Factory-bonded waterproofing flanges
Preformed shower trays
Do not combine components from different waterproofing systems unless their manufacturers confirm compatibility.
All corners, wall transitions, pipe penetrations, and fastener points must remain continuous with the shower waterproofing. The work should be inspected before the final tile is installed.
Form the Shower Floor Slope
The shower floor must fall toward the drain so water does not remain in low areas.
A linear drain against the wall commonly supports a single-plane slope. This simplifies the use of larger tiles because the floor does not need to fall toward a central point from several directions.
The actual slope must comply with local building requirements and the approved shower system.
Check the floor using a straightedge before tiling. Correcting a low point after the tile is installed is difficult and may require removal of the finished surface.
Do not slope the complete drain channel unless the product instructions require it. The surrounding floor and the internal drain construction perform different functions.
Install the Tile and Grate
Protect the channel opening while tile adhesive and grout are being applied. Construction debris entering the outlet can cause an immediate blockage.
Maintain the planned joint around the drain frame. Use sealant or grout according to the waterproofing and drain instructions.
After the tile has cured:
Remove the protective covering.
Clean the channel.
Install the hair strainer where supplied.
Adjust the grate height.
Confirm that the grate sits evenly.
Pour water across several floor areas.
Check the waste connection for leakage.
Confirm that no water remains in unintended low spots.
Keep the supplied lifting hook for future maintenance.
